3 Cancelled OAR Courses Reinstated With Funding from PEP

Feb 02 2009 - 15:00

We are pleased to announce that PEP has provided funding for 3 OARTM courses in the same locations (Sun Peaks, Power King and Smithers) that were on this year's schedule but were cancelled.  The new courses are not a reinstatement of cancelled courses so applicants will need to re-apply.  The JIBC will be issuing announcements for the slots very soon.  The PEP message below outlines this new initiative.  BCSARA is grateful to PEP for this assistance which will provide avalanche training during this year's high risk period.  Please forward this to all of your SAR groups, especially to those groups who you know had candidates who were cancelled previously so that they can get their names in quickly for the new course just as soon as the JIBC announcement goes out.  As noted in the PEP message below, I believe the JIBC will begin with one course and then issue for the next two on weekends in April when other OARTM courses are running in different locations.  So instead of one OARTM course happening in the province on a weekend, two or three will occur in multiple locations.

Don Bindon
BCSARA President

In late January 2009 PEP was informed by BCSARA and the SSTC that the combined funding provided to the JIBC for SAR training in 08/09 was almost exhausted, despite a number of courses still slated for delivery. As a result of the BCSARA shortfall, five Organized Avalanche Response (OAR) courses were cancelled.  Recognizing the critical need to offer these courses to the SAR community, PEP has explored other options and will fund the delivery of the following OAR Team Member courses.
Sun Peaks, April 3-5, 2009
Powder King, April 17-19, 2009
Smithers, April 17-19, 2009
PEP has contacted all SAR stakeholders including the JIBC, BCSARA and the RCMP to inform them of course reinstatements. All stakeholders have been very supportive of these efforts and commitment.

Please forward all inquiries related to registration for the above courses to the PEP Academy at JIBC through sar@jibc.ca or by calling 604.528.5786.

Thank you
